Walking into my partner's apartment, I'm drawn to a small framed picture of a pink sky with a horizon line of black mountains encircling a lake. Right above the lake flies a little UFO. It is close enough to Earth to land, close enough to be seen by the animals, close enough to be seen by anyone. I have, in fact, in my lifetime of 43 years on this Earth, witnessed 3 UFOs. The first one was in Florida in the late 80s and the other 2 were in NYC around 2013. Despite anyone’s belief, when you see them, you know. It is an undeniable object like the sun, or a bird, or anything that occupies the sky. When I look at the one in the drawing, I wonder if the artist who drew it, Ken Price, believes as well. Has he too seen a UFO in the sky? Does he too go to UFO watchtowers in the middle of the Colorado plains and carry around rocks shaped like alien heads? Does he visit Roswell and collect kitsch images that say I BELIEVE! Based on Ken's other drawings, I think there's a good chance. They are humorous but dystopian, simplistic while being voyeuristic. His mind seems to vibrate in the worldly unworldly. I will always be fascinated by Ken Price’s drawings, especially after taking a liking to the one of a UFO (even though he is better known in the art world for his sculptures). In any case, Ken Price, BEAM ME UP!
