Excerpt
For a while I became Heraclitus’s closest friend; I owe him, I believe, my fondness for parables. Later I visited St. Petersburg, but neither Gogol nor Pushkin was willing to listen to me. That was no tragedy for in the meantime The wise men of China had invited me to visit them. No, I cannot fulfill my duty to become by own contemporary.
