Excerpt
A history of Pompeii rife with black-and-white photos, primarily by Giovanni Vetti, reveal the marks of civilization, like a street worn into deep ruts cut by cart-wheels, remnants of the forum stand alert, like stubborn dominoes, and a fresco of elephants—makes me wonder if elephants live there now? Are there elephants in Italy? Were there? Can I see them? Where are you now?
