An early edition of the work that would become Gary Snyder's lifelong poetic project. Begun in the 1950s and revised over more than four decades, Mountains and Rivers Without End draws on Zen Buddhism, Native American traditions, ecology, and Chinese landscape painting to create one of the defining achievements of twentieth-century American poetry. Snyder was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Turtle Island in 1975.
