Daniel Johnston's first self-released cassettes are among the foundational works of outsider music in the early 1980s. Recorded on a tape recorder in his parents’ West Virginia basement, the earliest recordings introduced the intimate, unguarded songwriting that would define Johnston’s enduring legacy.
Produced and distributed by Johnston himself, the releases share the hand-drawn cover artwork that characterized his practice during this formative period. Presented together, they preserve both their individual histories and the continuity of Johnston’s work.
The set includes Songs of Pain, Frankenstein Love, Hi, How Are You, and Continued Story.
