These postcards were preserved by Norman Scherer, who worked alongside Basquiat in the late 1970s at the Unique Clothing Warehouse in New York's East Village, where the two dressed mannequins and created window displays. Scherer knew the artist simply as "Jean," years before Basquiat became an international figure. The group remained in Scherer's possession until their rediscovery decades later.
Signed "Jean Basquiat," rather than "Jean-Michel Basquiat," the postcards capture a moment before the artist's public identity had fully formed.
