The Tabouret dit Caillebotis (Duckboard Stool), designed by René Gabriel in 1941. Its sober frame and distinctive grid-pattern seat conserve material through open construction. Honest joinery and simple geometry reflect the functional integrity of French Reconstruction design. The slatted seat proved difficult to manufacture, making original 1941 caillebotis examples scarce.
Gabriel was enlisted by the French government to design practical, democratic furniture for postwar France.
